Pancakes and Praise
May 11, 2009Sequoia was recently covered in the local newspaper, The Montclarion! Here’s what they said about us:
Dad’s Club fundraiser raises money,
builds school community
By J.M. Brown
Correspondent
Armed with a metal spatula, new recruit Martin Bond assumed his duties gladly.
As one of the newest members of the 70-year-old Dads’ Club, the Hawaiian-shirt clad Bond tended to the crispy bacon and sizzling sausage accompanying the hot cakes and scrambled eggs that help fund art and garden classes for his son, Miles, and 350 other students at Oakland’s Sequoia Elementary.
Even though it meant a spending a sweaty, grease-laden Sunday morning in front of a steaming grill, the club’s annual Pancake Breakfast and Rummage Sale is exactly the kind of opportunity Bond and his wife sought when choosing the Dimond District school instead of one closer to their neighborhood near Mills College.
“An important reason we chose Sequoia is the active parents’ club,” said Bond, who is among a quarter of the school’s parent population that lives outside its attendance area.
Many parents at last weekend’s event said the high amount of parent involvement is what draws them to Sequoia. Established in 1939, the Dads’ Club is the oldest parent organization at the Lincoln Street school, which itself turned 100 this year. While the group’s name indicates all-male membership, there are plenty of women who take part.
The Dads’ Club has worked with the school’s other key organization, the Friends of Sequoia School, to raise a combined goal of $30,000 annually for the arts, library, garden and other enrichment programs that are often the first to be slashed when public schools suffer deep state funding cuts like those seen this year.At least 270 people gobbled up 700-plus pancakes on May 3, raising more than $1,100. Parents and community members also bought more than $2,000 in books, clothes and other items at the rummage sale, which started Saturday and continued Sunday.
“We try to do the most good for the most number of students,” said breakfast organizer Scott Wikstrom, whose daughters, Clarisse and Eleanor are in the fourth and first grades, respectively.
Attendance at the breakfast has doubled in recent years, and there also has been a steady increase in the Dads’ Club membership, Wikstrom said. He believes a key reason is that parents from the neighborhood are more willing now than in years past to explore the benefits of public school.
Besides fundraising for the school, events like the breakfast are also key social opportunities for parents, who are ethnically and economically diverse, to get to know each other and the school staff.
In fact, the reputation of Sequoia’s staff is a big draw, said parent Leila Abu-Saba, whose son Jacob is a second-grader. Like Bond, Abu-Saba lives closer to another school but chose Sequoia for its teachers.
“We love this school,” she said as she sifted through children’s T-shirts at the rummage sale. “There is not a single teacher you wouldn’t want your student to study with.”
Abu-Saba said she also appreciates the school’s mission to teach nonviolent conflict resolution and nurture a well-developed sense of parental community. Indeed, parent engagement is critical to a school’s success, said Amy Colt, who lives in the neighborhood and teaches at nearby Bret Harte Middle School.
“It’s very, very big,” Colt said of parent fundraising efforts. “They can reach out to many parts of the community, like homeowners who are going to stay here.” At the rummage sale’s crowded clothing table, Colt loaded her arms with shirts and pants for students at her school who have to wear uniforms but can’t afford a bunch of new clothes.
Several feet away, prospective Sequoia parent Kathie Rhodes also rummaged through the piles, hoping to find a bargain.
She and husband Roger King, who live just around the corner, plan to send their two children, now ages 1 and 3, to Sequoia when they are old enough.
“It’s a great fundraiser to bring the neighborhood together,” Rhodes said , adding that she heard Sequoia’s principal, Kyla Trammell, and the teachers are wonderful.
“It’s exciting to have a high-quality school in our neighborhood.”
The school will have another opportunity to raise funds from 5-9 p.m. May 12-14. Red Boy Pizza, 1500 Leimert Blvd., will host Dine Out for Sequoia. The restaurant will donate 15 percent of proceeds from diners who present a flier that can be downloaded at the school’s site, www.sequoiaschool.net.

People were gambling there. My parents were at the slots. I went to a casino that was very weird. I did not like the weird casino because it was inappropriate for kids. The ceiling had women on it. Laitsuen Wu 2/11/09
When It’s Okay To Scream by Frank(Izabella)
February 11, 2009Don’t you get annoyed when people scream for no reason whatsoever? Esp in your ear? Well this will tell you if they have a reason so you don’t get in trouble for yelling your head off at them and shove them off of a building? Well you probably haven’t shoved someone off a building, but you get the idea…
If you fall off of a really tall chair when you’re not expecting it you can scream, while if you see a tiny spider, not one of those ones with fangs bigger than your arm, but a jumping spider for instance, and its not doing ANYTHING, then its NOT okay to scream and if you do you’ll get pushed off a building. The ones with fangs bigger than your arm (and also poisonous spiders) are en exception. Now if your house blows up or something or yours blows up (including yourself) you can scream. As long as it’s something of YOURS like your car or your house or your dog. If you see something like an airplane blow up on the news, WHY would you scream? WHO in their right mind would scream? Anyway, You’re going to get shoved off a bridge if you do.
Anyway, that gives you a good idea about when you can yell at someone or shove them off a bridge or building (just kidding about the bridge thing)

EVIL THINGIES by Fred (Clarisse)
February 11, 2009You know how you call people mean, right? Well I like to call them EVIL. I can give you many examples of evil people. Like my sister for instance. She’s evil because evil sisters can get very evil. Evil is also one of my very favorite words.
In different places there are different evil things. Like in Joshua Tree there are alot of evil spiky plants that you have to make sure they don’t poke your butt. There are some evil animals in the world, too. Pretend you are in a rainforest and you happen to bump into an evil, evil, fat, scary hippo that wants to eat you! That would be very evil.

Ballet By Julia-Rose
February 11, 2009Hello. I am going to tell you about ballet. I love going to ballet it is very fun. We do all sorts of streches. Then we dance at the bars. After we dance on the floor. Later we travel around the room. It is fantastic. After ballet I feel very nice.
When you dance you are not really thinking about anything. It just helps you relax. A lot of people think balllet is just for girls, but that is not at all true. Boys: please do not think that ballet is a girly thing because it is’nt.
Ballet is very helpful in school because it helps your brain work. ballet is a great way to exersize. So if you are ever low on exersize ballet is the thing to do.

Cheese By Julia-Rose
February 11, 2009- Hi kids! I love cheese and I want to give you some advice on cheese. When you eat cheese make sure you don’t buy the orange cheddar because that has die and that isn’t healthy. If you get to choose your own cheese a very delicious kind is sharp cheddar. There is one kind that is very good, but I can’t remember the name of it. I would recommend a raw cheese. Those are rather yummy.
- People all over the world eat cheese. Cheese is very useful. We use cheese for sandwiches, pasta, salad (sometimes), crackers, burgers, and a lot of other things. I am very fond of cheese. Cheese was invented in Greece I think. There are milllions of people who love cheese.
- When you eat cheese make sure you savor the moment. It may not be every day you eat that great cheese.

Math Gym review by victor
November 12, 2008
Have you kids ever wondered what the hardest game of math
is? Well your prayers have been answered. The really hard game is Tetrus. It is a game were you get really fustrated. You have to connect the blocks and fill up the whole grid. I truly think it’s impossible.
I tried to finish but the controls are hard to use. You flip you spin jump and do everything. I hope one day I won’t keep on going home feeling like a butter fingers that can’t control the keyboard. Just to let you know this game is really depressing. It makes me feel sad and mad. If you know any cheats I’m begging you to tell me. For the sake of god and the human race. Try this game and go home feeling like a dummy!

Hey Kids,
l am here to tell you about a good web site for practicing multiplication or addition. It’s called Batter’s Up Baseball. Here’s how it works.
First, you need to choose Addition or Multiplication. Then, you will have a choice of going for a single, a double or a homerun. Be careful, if you go for a homerun some of them are hard! Well, not that hard but you’ll need scratch paper. If you want to be lazy like me and just do it all in your head, you might want to stick mainly to doubles and singles.
Try it out. The worse that can happen is that you get a strike. Three strikes you’re out. Well, actually the worst thing that can happen is you spill your coca-cola on the keyboard and fry your computer’s brain. Actually, even worse would be if you drank that soda and rotted out your teeth and got all full of corn syrup and didn’t fit into any of your clothes anymore and had to come to school in a bathrobe and not smile anymore.
Now that I’ve got you fascinated, here’s how you get there. Just click HERE! Batter up!

Dog Abuse By Helen
November 5, 2008
Have you ever seen such cruelty like dog fighting? Training a dog to fight is illegal. If you see dogs fighting on the street tell a parent or call 911. Dog fighting is dog abuse. People think it is funny but this is a serious situation. If you are seen doing this you will go to jail. Dogs are like people and if you kill a dog on purpose it’s just like killing a person. Dogs need care like you do with a person.
Dogs are a mans bestfriend. If you buy a dog and train it to fight, what’s the point of buying a dog. Listen to this ” Treat a person how you wanted to be treated”, said ? Listen to this” Treat a dog how you want to be treated.

Rock band play long time on expert drums
November 5, 2008
This is a song on the video game called rock band. This is one of the hardest songs and it took me long to complete. I’ve seen people on the internet do this and it got me inspired. So when I got the game rock band I quickly unlocked this song and I tried on expert drums. At first I did not know what i was doing so I took a break.
A couple of weeks later I tried it and saw that I still wasn’t very good. So I started to practice. I finally learned how to do it on medium. So then I tried it on hard. It was a big difference. I was on my last couple of notes and I failed. But don’t worry I learned it on hard. Finaly it was my big chance to do it on expert. But I failed. But then that day I DID IT. I was so happy. The hardest part was to do the lefty mode drum role and use your right hand to hit these other notes.

November 5, 2008The other day I was riding bikes around Mills College when I came to a little pond. I stopped to rest and sat on a bench next to the water. Suddenly, something moved. I looked closer. It had antennae and pincers, like some sort of strange alien. It was a crayfish!
Crayfish are faster than you think. They seem to crawl about awkwardly but when you reach for them they suddenly shoot backwards. It’s amazing! They do this by flapping their tail hard and bending it under them. It’s a sneaky trick.
Crayfish have cool bodies. Not only do they have these big freaky pincers, they also have little pincers on their front legs. They have eight legs in all. They also have an exoskeleton to protect their body, kind of like Iron Man. If I were a superhero, I might be CrawDaddy.

The A.B.C Murders reveiwed by ClarisseFred
October 31, 2008Do you like murders? Do you like blood? Do you like knives? Do you like all of them together? Then you will like A.B.C Murders because it is a very interesting murder book. It is very exciting and the part that I think is exciting is the part when Hercule Poirot and Hastings talk to Alexander Bornaparte cust and when he admits he’s the murder, but doesn’t know if he committed the Murders. Find out if he is the Murderer if you read this book.
But, ahah! I am not done yet, so do not dare to leave. A.B.C Murders is by Agatha Christie and you can borrow it at Dimond Library, or, buy it online, I’m thinking Amazon. So read!

Chasing Vermeer reveiwed by Izabella
October 31, 2008Do you like books? Do you like art? How about a book about art? Then you will like this book because it’s about art, and if you don’t like nonfiction then you can still enjoy it. This book is a combintaion of both nonfiction and fiction. Vermeer is actually a real artist but the two sixth graders that look for one of his stolen paintings are just made up by Blue Balliett, the author.
I enjoy the part when Ms. Hussy breaks her arm somehow and everyone is wondering what happened. Maybe you will enjoy that part too. So go to your local bookstore or library and read it!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban Book Review By Ty’Anna
October 29, 2008When you read really good books do you ever find yourself after you read the book thinking you were just watching a movie? Well if you ever read this book or any other Harry Potter, and you like reading that will happen to you. So far I’ve read all of them one through four and now I am reading the fifth one. If you like exciting, adventurous, and mysterious books then you’ll love these books.
I would even reccomend these books to first graders but only if they’re really really really good readers. Probably even as high as tenth graders. So if you like books like that then you should read these books. And if you don’t read them in order then nothing will make sense.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Review By Jerome
October 29, 2008Have you ever wanted to read someone’s personal diary? Well you can. But not a real diary. There was this boy name Greg. He got a diary from his mom. He said he wanted to get a journal not a diary. So he writes wacky stuff about what happens at school, home, and even almost every day. He’s like your life if you have something to say. When I heard of this book, it was very funny and hilarious.
The part I like is the comic strip. So Greg and his friend Rowley are trying to win to be the next cartoonists. So they make a comic strip. The comic book that thy are making is called Zoo Wee Mama. But then Rowley quits and Greg is trying to make another comic book that is better than that comic. He got finished with the whole Zoo Wee Mama comic. So he decided to start on another comic of his own.
This is a good book to know. It’s about something that you have to learn. I learned that to not get the cheese touch. There was this cheese that if anybody touches it, they get the cheese touch. It’s like the cooties, but it is a very stinky cheese. It’s been standing in the basketball court for a long time. If that was real I would never touch that cheese ever. But still this book is my favorite book I ever read. So picture if you had the cheese touch, what would it feel like?
So thanks people for reading this review of the book Diary of a Wimpy or the second part of Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules. Rodrick is his older brother. So be on the look out next time.

Charlie and the great glass elevator Review by Frances
October 29, 2008If you liked Charlie and the Chocolate factory you will love Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. It is the sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Charlie wins the Chocolate factory, but when Willy Wonka blasts the glass elevator out of the factory he goes to far! They go out into space. The people in the glass elevator is the whole family. It’s Charlie’s mom, dad, his dad’s dad, his dad’s mom, his mom’s mom, his mom’s dad, and Mr. Wonka. Then they land on the space hotel. The people in a space station think that they’re aliens. To find out what happens next you have to read the book.
I like this book because it is very funny in some parts. For example, when one of the grandmas gets mad at Willy Wonka she tries to get up but instead she starts to float. It takes a lot of the people in the elevator to help her get back into bed.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules Review by Tiffany
October 29, 2008HELLO people! Want to read a great book full of fun adventures and comedy? Well, you’ve come to the right person. I am here to recommend the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney. This is book two of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. If you ever read Diary of a Wimpy Kid and you liked it then you will love this book. You will laugh so hard that you better not be drinking milk when you read or it will come right out.
This is one of my favorite books because as I said it is full of fun adventures and comedy. I read this book so many times I know almost all the events in order. I just can’t get enough of it. I am pretty darn sure you will LOVE this book as much as I do. Trust me. If you are a kid then you can connect to most of the events and Greg the main character does lots of embarrassing things. So if you have ever been embarrassed then you will know he understands your embarrassment. Anyway, this is a GREAT book. Thank you for reading my book review.

Haunted Animals Review By Helen
October 29, 2008Have you read a book when an animal dies and comes back to their former owner? Well this book is full of stories about dogs and other animals coming back to their owner and haunting them or just visiting them. Some of these stories are emotional and really sad. When I first read a chapter about the book it reminds me of when my dog dies will she come back and haunt me because I just love her so much (sometimes she gets a little crazy.) I read this book over and over again because it is such a great book.
This book is a chapter book but there are other series like haunting teachers or something like that. Well I forget. I will recommend this book to everybody because it makes you learn what will maybe happen to you if your pet dies. Well maybe it won’t happen or maybe it will.
My favorite chapter in the book was Bingo’s Secret. It is about a dog who protects his owner but one day his owner died of leukemia cancer in the blood. At the end the owner died and the dog died too but the boss of the grave sight didn’t let them bury the dog. So they secretly buried him there and at night when you passed by the graveyard you might hear a boy laughing and a dog barking.

Phantom Tollbooth Review
October 29, 2008
Do you ever feel bored? Do you ever sit in your room and wish something would happen to you? So did Milo. Then a large package arrived and the adventure began! It is the tale of a journey between two lands, a land of words and a land of numbers.
The Phantom Tollbooth is one of my favorite books because it is filled with word jokes. For example, there’s the time when the car is not moving and someone says, “Shhh. Don’t talk.” “Why not?” asks Milo. “Because it goes without saying.”
This book is also filled with great characters. There is the boy who comes from a land where you are born in the air and then grown down until your feet touch the ground. There is the guy who says he is either the tallest midget in the world or the smallest giant. There is Tock the watch dog. Also, the Mathemagician. Try it! You won’t be disappointed!
